Last year I was reintroduced to Pears’ Cyclopaedia and I fell in love with reference books all over again.

I know it’s easy to dismiss the value of a home reference in the age of the internet but they aren’t really the same thing. The internet is a sprawling megatropolis of spurious information and misinformation. Each topic vies for your attention and some fall by the wayside. We search for things we used to know not what we have never known – what was that song from way back? Who wrote that book I read all that time ago. Absurdly, I am still having massive problems with reading. I think it’s becoming a bit of a thing now¬†and I’m sabotaging myself.

I have been reading a book of facts which is fine but it’s not very enriching – there is no plot or character development, just potential self-improvement. I started on Jed Rubenfeld’s ‘The Interpretation of Murder’ last night and, while I can see it has early merits, I knew straight away that there was no way I was going to settle into it. Read More
